What it is

Ryaltris Nasal Spray is a prescription-only medicine used to treat symptoms of allergic rhinitis, including sneezing, runny or blocked nose, and nasal itching. It combines two active ingredients: olopatadine hydrochloride (an antihistamine) and mometasone furoate (a corticosteroid) which offers both quick relief and long-term control of nasal allergy symptoms.

How it works

Ryaltris works in two ways to tackle the causes and effects of nasal allergies. Olopatadine blocks histamine, the chemical responsible for itching, sneezing and runny nose. Mometasone reduces inflammation and swelling in the nasal passages, easing congestion and helping you breathe more easily. The dual-action formula targets both the immediate allergic reaction and the inflammation that follows, providing comprehensive symptom relief.

How to use

Adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over should use two sprays into each nostril twice daily (morning and evening). Shake the bottle well before each use and blow your nose gently before spraying. Prime the pump before first use, or if it has not been used for more than 14 days. Do not exceed the recommended dose.

Who it's for

Ryaltris Nasal Spray is suitable for adults and children aged 12 years and over who experience moderate to severe hay fever or perennial allergic rhinitis caused by pollen, dust mites, or pet dander. It is not suitable for children under 12 years of age.

When should this spray not be used?

Do not use Ryaltris if you are allergic to olopatadine, mometasone, or any other ingredient in the spray. Avoid use if you have an untreated nasal infection, recent nasal surgery, or injury that has not healed. Speak to your doctor before using Ryaltris if you have tuberculosis, eye herpes, untreated infections, or a weakened immune system.

Warnings & precautions

Use Ryaltris only as prescribed. Avoid spraying it into your eyes or mouth. Prolonged use of corticosteroid nasal sprays may, in rare cases, affect adrenal function or growth in children. If you are using other corticosteroid medicines (inhaled, oral, or injected), consult your doctor before starting Ryaltris. Report any persistent nasal irritation, vision changes, or nosebleeds to your healthcare professional.

Possible side effects

Common side effects include a mild bitter taste, nosebleeds, nasal discomfort, sneezing after use, or headache. Less common effects can include throat irritation, drowsiness, or dryness in the nose or throat. Rarely, allergic reactions such as rash, swelling or breathing difficulties may occur — stop using the spray and seek immediate medical attention if these happen.

Drowsiness and driving

Ryaltris may occasionally cause drowsiness due to the antihistamine component. If you feel sleepy or less alert after using the spray, do not drive, cycle, or operate machinery until you feel fully awake. Avoid alcohol as it can increase drowsiness.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

Ryaltris should only be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding if a doctor considers it necessary. If you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding, talk to your GP or pharmacist before using this medicine to make sure it is suitable for you.

Other nasal sprays we offer

If Dymista is not suitable for you, or if your symptoms are mild and controlled with a single active ingredient, our pharmacy offers several effective alternatives. These sprays target nasal inflammation and allergy symptoms in different ways:

  • Mometasone Nasal Spray - a corticosteroid spray that helps reduce swelling and irritation caused by hay fever and perennial rhinitis.
  • Flixonase Nasal Spray - contains fluticasone propionate to relieve sneezing, nasal congestion, and itching associated with allergic rhinitis.
  • Avamys Nasal Spray - contains fluticasone furoate, designed for once-daily use to provide 24-hour relief from allergy symptoms.
  • Beclometasone Nasal Spray - an effective corticosteroid option for reducing nasal inflammation and congestion due to hay fever or allergies.
  • Dymista Nasal Spray - combines azelastine and fluticasone for dual-action relief from allergic rhinitis symptoms.

More information

For complete prescribing details, read the Summary of Product Characteristics (SPC) and Patient Information Leaflet on the EMC website. You can also visit the NHS hay fever advice page for further information on managing allergy symptoms.

  • How quickly does Ryaltris work?

Many people feel relief from sneezing and nasal congestion within a few hours of using Ryaltris, though the full effect develops after several days of regular use. Consistent dosing morning and evening provides best results.

  • Can I use Ryaltris with other allergy medicines?

Ryaltris provides both antihistamine and steroid action, so most people do not need additional allergy tablets. However, if symptoms persist, your doctor or pharmacist may advise using Ryaltris alongside an oral antihistamine for short periods.

  • Can I use Ryaltris every day?

Yes. Ryaltris can be used daily throughout the allergy season or year-round for perennial allergies. If symptoms improve significantly, your doctor may recommend reducing the frequency of use.

  • What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it's close to your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one — do not double the dose to make up for it.
