What is an Avamys Nasal Spray?

Avamys nasal spray contains fluticasone furoate which is a corticosteroid which reduces inflammation. Allergic rhinitis is when the nasal passages become inflamed due to the presence of an allergen causing symptoms such as a runny or blocked nose and sneezing.
When used as a nasal spray fluticasone can act directly on the area to reduce inflammation and provide symptom to relief, without any of the systemic side effects.

How Avamys Nasal Spray works

Avamys nasal spray contains fluticasone belongs the class of drugs known as corticosteroids. It works to reduce the symptoms of inflammation such as swelling, redness and itching.
Fluticasone reduces the swelling and mucus in your nose. It needs to be used for 2–3 days to see its full effect and then needs to be continually used. The effects are usually stronger than antihistamines at reducing symptoms

How to take use Avamys Nasal Spray

The usual dose is ONE or TWO sprays into each nostril, twice a day. Do not excess 4 doses in a 24 hour period.

  • Before using the spray blow your nose gently.
  • Press your finger on one nostril.
  • Bend your head slightly forward and put the spray nozzle into your other nostril.
  • Slowly breathe in through your nose and press down to squirt a spray into your nostril.
  • Breathe out through your mouth.

Once your symptoms are under control you can try reducing your dose.

Who cannot use an Avamys nasal spray

They are generally well tolerated and suitable for most people aged 6 years and over. However it may not be suitable if you:

  1. Have previously had an allergic reaction to Beclometasone
  2. Take other corticosteroids
  3. Have had nose surgery
  4. Have a nasal infection
  5. Are pregnant or trying to get pregnant

Avamys nasal spray interactions

It has minimal interactions as only a minimal amount of corticosteroid enters the blood stream when used as a nasal spray the main ones to watch out for are:

  1. HIV treatments such as ritonavir
  2. Other corticosteroids such as if you use a steroid inhaler or cream


You should also be aware that any herbal or alternative remedies you take may also interact with this medication and cause side effects. If you are taking any herbal or alternative remedies make sure to mention them to your GP, or on the consultation form so we can make sure they are safe to take together.

Avamys nasal spray side effects

As with any medication you take, there is a possibility of side effects occurring. Most people do not experience any side effect and if they do they will usually be mild. The most common experienced side effects include:

  1. Sneezing
  2. Dry/Sore throat
  3. Hoarse voice
  4. Unpleasant taste or smell
  5. Sore nose
  6. Nosebleeds

Stop using the nasal spray and contact your doctor if you experience:

  1. Problems with your breathing, damage to your nose or sores inside your nose
  2. Changes to your eyesight, blurred vision or a cloudy lens in the eye
  3. A sign of an allergic reaction such as skin rash, wheezing, swelling

Side effects should go away as you get used to the medication, if any of the side effects persist, you can try an alternative medicine such as an anti-histamine or contact your doctor for advice.

This medication should not make you drowsy or affect your ability to drive.

Yes it is fine to drink alcohol while using the nasal spray.

It should be fine to be used during pregnancy as little enters your bloodstream, always contact your doctor before starting any medication while you are or might be pregnant.

  • Can I use Avamys nasal spray with other allergy medication?

    You can use Avamys nasal spray alongisde anti-histamines such as Loratadine, Cetirizine and eye drops such as sodium cromoglicate. Do not use Avamys nasal spray with another corticosteroid such as Beclometasone nasal spray, always read the label of your medicine to make sure it does not contain a corticosteroid. If you have any concerns about if you can take a medicine alongside Avamys nasal spray, contact your pharmacist or doctor.

  • Can I use a Avamys nasal spray while pregnant?

    Yes, it should be fine to use however always contact your doctor when thinking of using any medication while you may be or are pregnant.

  • Can I use Avamys nasal spray while breastfeeding?

    Yes, it should be to use while breastfeeding as only a tiny amount passes through breast milk.

  • Can I drive while using a Avamys nasal spray?

    Yes, it should not make you drowsy or affect your ability to drive.

    You may feel an effect within 8 hours but it may take up to 7-14 days for the full effect to be seen.

  • Can I use Avamys nasal spray and drink alcohol?
