eye infections
An eye infection occurs when germs, such as bacteria or viruses, enter your eye and cause it to become red, swollen, and painful. Your eye might also be watery, itchy, or have a yellow or green discharge. Eye infections can happen from touching your eyes with dirty hands, wearing dirty contact lenses, or from other illnesses. They are common and can usually be treated with eye drops or ointment to help clear up the infection.
