Syndol Headache Relief Tablets
What are Syndol Headache Relief Tablets?
Syndol Headache Relief Tablets are used for short-term relief of mild to moderate pain, especially tension headaches, migraines, and dental or muscular pain. They contain a combination of paracetamol and codeine phosphate. This product is a pharmacy-only medicine and should be used under the guidance of a pharmacist. Unlike original Syndol Tablets, this version does not contain a sedating antihistamine, so it is less likely to cause drowsiness.
How do they work?
Each tablet contains:
- Paracetamol (500mg): a commonly used painkiller and fever reducer
- Codeine phosphate (8mg): a mild opioid that helps block pain signals
When combined, these two ingredients can provide stronger pain relief than paracetamol alone. This medicine is intended for short-term use when other painkillers have not worked.
How to take Syndol Headache Relief Tablets
- Adults and children over 12: Take 1-2 tablets every 4-6 hours as needed
- Do not take more than 8 tablets in 24 hours
- Do not use for more than 3 days continuously without medical advice
- Swallow whole with water — do not crush or chew
- Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine
Who are they for?
These tablets are for adults and children over 12 who need pain relief for conditions such as:
- Tension-type headaches
- Migraine attacks
- Muscle pain
- Dental pain
- Period pain
They should only be used if paracetamol or ibuprofen alone has not helped. This product is not suitable for children under 12, or anyone who is pregnant, breastfeeding, or allergic to codeine.

Syndol and other pain killers
They are commonly taken with Ibuprofen tablets.
Be careful of any
cold & flu remedies as they may contain paracetamol and do not take paracetamol tablets with this medicine as it
already contains them.
Syndol and Codeine tolerance
If you take Syndol for a prolonged period of time, you may find you become tolerant to it and it becomes less effective at providing pain relief. You may also become dependent on the Codeine if taken regularly for a long period of time. For these reasons you should keep use to as short of a period time with as few tablets taken as possible. Overuse of Syndol can also lead to chronic migraines.
Syndol overdose
Taking more than the recommended amount of Syndol can lead to serious damage to the liver and kidneys. If you accidentally take too many tablets (more than 1 or 2 tablets) one time it is unlikely to be harmful. Do not take anymore tablets for a 24 hour period. If you you take more than 2 tablets extra or more than 8 in a 24 hour period contact 111 of your GP. If you find it difficult to breathe contact 999.
Syndol and pregnancy
It is not recommended to take Syndol if you are or are currently, could be or are trying to become pregnant. Paracetamol can be taken during pregnancy but codeine is generally avoided as it can cause codeine dependency in the unborn child. If you require pain relief during pregnancy and you find Paracetamol is not strong enough, contact your GP.
Syndol and breastfeeding
It is not recommended to take Syndol if you are breastfeeding. Paracetamol can be taken during breastfeeding but the codeine is generally avoided as it can pass into the breast milk and affect your child's breathing. If you require pain relief while breastfeeding and you find Paracetamol is not strong enough, contact your GP.

Other alternatives include:
