What Are Propecia Tablets?

Propecia tablets are a safe and effective treatment for men for hair loss (male pattern baldness) and is the generic version of Finasteride tablets. They work by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that plays a role in hair loss. They are taken every day and may take several motnhs to see results.
Use of Finasteride for hair loss is not available on the NHS and is therefore only available through private services.

How to buy Propecia tablets

You can use our online prescription service to buy Propecia tablets online in the UK. We are a regulated GPhC registered pharmacy based in the UK. Any website that claims to sell Propecia tablets without a prescription is operating illegally and you could be purchasing counterfeit / fake tablets.
Upon completion of your order, our independent prescriber will then review your online assessment. If your assessment is approved, our pharmacy team will then receive a prescription and dispense your order, which will be dispatched the same day using your chosen delivery method.

How it works

Propecia contain the active ingredient Finasteride which belongs to a group of medicines called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. This stops testosterone from being converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT can make your prostate bigger and also cause hair loss, by preventing the conversion to DHT Finasteride can help prevent hair loss.
More than 80% of men who take Finasteride have found their hair loss to stop and 66% reported hair regrowth.

Finasteride is best taken when the hair has started thinning, it is less likely to be effective if their is already complete hair loss. Therefore treatment should be started sooner rather than later when you notice your hair is thinning.

How to take Propecia

Propecia for hair loss is taken daily as a 1mg tablet. It starts working rapidly but continuous use for 3 - 6 months is needed before a benefit is seen.
It is important to note that Propecia is a preventative and not a cure and therefore needs to be taken continuously and its effects are reversed 6 - 12 months after treatment is discontinued.
If there is no improvement after taking Propecia for 12 continuous months you may want to consider alternative methods of treatment.
Pregnant women should not handle any Propecia tablets as it may harm the unborn child. If the tablet is whole not broken it should be fine as there is usually a film coating to prevent absorption through the skin.

Is Propecia safe?

Finasteride is considered safe to be taken for a long time. Many people take it for many months or even years without any problems.
There are some cases of breast cancer in some men taking Finasteride, but this is rare. Stop taking Finasteride and speak to your doctor if you get any changes in your chest area such as lumps, pain or swelling, or discharge from your nipples.

Propecia side effects

As with any medication you take, there is a possibility of side effects occurring. The side effects of Finasteride include a decrease in sex drive, depression, erectile dysfunction. However these only affect around 1% of men who take it. If you would like to see a full list of side effect please refer to the SPC below or look in the patient information leaflet.
The more serious side effects include suicidal thoughts, fatigue, change in chest area, fever, persistent diarrhoea and unexplained weight loss. If you experience any of these, please contact your doctor and stop taking Finasteride immediately.

Side effects are uncommon with Finasteride and any sexual side effects tend to improve with time with most men finding them to disappear after 2 years of continuos use. Most side effects will stop after stopping Finasteride, however a small amount of men continued to have sexual side effects after cessation of treatment.

Finasteride vs Propecia

Propecia is simply the brand name for Finasteride 1mg, which was first made by Merck & Co, since it is no longer under patent other drug companies can now manufacture Finasteride 1mg tablets at a much lower price. Despite the name difference both tablets contain the exact same active ingredient, which is Finasteride.

Who cannot take Propecia

Finasteride has been found to be safe for most men and is well tolerated. However it may not be suitable if you:

  1. Have previously had an allergic reaction to Finasteride
  2. Have severe bladder problems
  3. Have suffered with liver problems
  4. You are trying for a baby or have a pregnant partner – this medicine passes into semen and can affect an unborn baby

Alternative Hair Loss Treatments

An alternative to Propecia tablets is Regaine Extra Strength. This has been proven to be effective and can also be used alongside taking Propecia to improve results. Regaine is also available to buy here on Hightown pharmacy.
