What is Orajel Extra Strength Gel?
Orajel Extra Strength Gel contains benzocaine 20%, a local anaesthetic that numbs the area to give temporary toothache relief. It is intended for pain from a broken tooth or a tooth that needs a filling while you arrange dental treatment.
What is Orajel Extra Strength Gel used for?
The gel can ease toothache temporarily, but it does not repair a cavity or treat an abscess. Arrange a dentist appointment to identify and treat the cause. If you think you have an abscess, seek urgent dental care rather than relying on numbing gel.
How to use Orajel Extra Strength Gel
For adults and children aged 12 and over, use a clean finger to apply a green-pea-sized amount into the tooth cavity, up to four times daily. Do not use below age 12. Avoid hot drinks while using the gel.
Use only for short-term relief until you can see a dentist, not continuously. Seek advice if pain persists or worsens.
Do not use if you have a benzocaine or ingredient allergy, have been diagnosed with the blood condition methaemoglobinaemia, or take a sulphonamide antibiotic such as co-trimoxazole. Ask a pharmacist before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Orajel Extra Strength Gel side effects
Side effects may include temporary numbness, irritation, or redness at the application site. In rare cases, allergic reactions such as rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing may occur. If any severe reactions happen, discontinue use and seek medical attention.
Call 999 or go to A&E for difficulty breathing, speaking or swallowing, substantial mouth swelling, or swelling around an eye with pain or vision changes. A suspected dental abscess needs urgent dental care; NHS 111 can help if you cannot reach a dentist.
How to store Orajel Extra Strength Gel
Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C. Keep out of reach of children, and ensure the cap is tightly closed after use. Do not use after the expiry date.
Where to buy Orajel Extra Strength Gel
You can buy Orajel Extra Strength Gel from almost any pharmacy including online here at Hightown Pharmacy. As it is a pharmacy only medicine a short consultation with the pharmacist is required first to make sure this medication is suitable for you.
