What is Nicorette QuickMist?

Nicorette QuickMist is a nicotine mouth spray. It's a type of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) that relieves cravings and withdrawal symptoms when you're stopping smoking or vaping.1

You can also use it to cut down before you stop, or at times when you can't or don't want to smoke or vape.1

Each spray gives 1mg of nicotine, and each dispenser holds at least 150 sprays.1

NRT gives you nicotine without the tar, carbon monoxide and other harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke. The aim is to stop smoking or vaping completely, then gradually stop using NRT too.

How does Nicorette QuickMist work?

When you stop or cut down smoking or vaping, the drop in nicotine can cause cravings and withdrawal symptoms. These include low mood, poor sleep, irritability, anxiety, restlessness, difficulty concentrating and increased appetite.1

QuickMist replaces some of that nicotine. Most of it is absorbed through the lining of your mouth, and it's absorbed faster than nicotine from gum or lozenges. That makes it suited to sudden cravings.1

How to use Nicorette QuickMist

Before first use, or if you haven't used it for 2 days, prime the pump. Point it safely away from you and anyone nearby, including children and pets, and press the top 3 times until a fine spray appears. Priming uses up some sprays.1

Each time you use it:

  1. Hold the nozzle as close to your open mouth as you can.
  2. Press the top to release one spray into your mouth, avoiding your lips.
  3. Don't breathe in while you spray, so it doesn't go down your throat.
  4. Try not to swallow for a few seconds afterwards.

Don't eat or drink while you're using the spray, and take care not to spray it into your eyes.1

How much Nicorette QuickMist to use

Use 1 or 2 sprays when you'd normally smoke or vape, or when a craving starts. If one spray hasn't controlled the craving after a few minutes, use a second. If you find you need 2, you can take them one after the other in future.1

Most smokers need 1 to 2 sprays every 30 minutes to an hour.1

Don't use more than:1

  • 2 sprays at a time
  • 4 sprays in an hour
  • 64 sprays in 24 hours

Stopping completely or cutting down first

If you're ready to stop now: replace all your cigarettes or vapes with QuickMist. As soon as you can, use fewer sprays until you've stopped using it altogether.1

If you'd rather cut down first: use QuickMist between cigarettes or vapes to make the gaps longer, and cut down as much as you can. Aim to stop completely as soon as you feel ready.1

Using QuickMist on top of your usual smoking or vaping can give you too much nicotine. Signs include feeling or being sick, extra saliva, tummy pain, diarrhoea, sweating, headache, dizziness, hearing problems and feeling very weak. If this happens, stop all nicotine and get medical advice.1

If you've stopped smoking or vaping but are finding it hard to stop using the spray, speak to a pharmacist or doctor.1

Using Nicorette QuickMist with a nicotine patch

A nicotine patch gives you a steady background level of nicotine through the day. QuickMist can be used on top of that for sudden or breakthrough cravings. This is called combination NRT.

The evidence for it is strong. A 2023 Cochrane review of 16 trials involving 12,169 people found that using a patch with a fast-acting form of NRT raised long-term quit rates by about 27% compared with using one form alone. The reviewers rated this as high-certainty evidence.2

We stock Nicorette InvisiPatch in 25mg, 15mg and 10mg strengths. Follow the directions for each product, and ask a pharmacist if you're not sure how to combine them.

Who can use Nicorette QuickMist?

Nicorette QuickMist can be used by adults and children aged 12 and over.1

Don't use it if:

  • you're under 12
  • you're allergic to nicotine or any of the other ingredients

Who should get advice before using Nicorette QuickMist?

Speak to a pharmacist or doctor before using QuickMist if you:1

  • have recently had a heart attack or stroke, or have unstable or worsening angina, a serious heart rhythm problem or uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • have diabetes, as you may need to check your blood sugar more often when you stop smoking
  • have a stomach ulcer, gastritis or inflammation of the food pipe (oesophagitis)
  • have moderate to severe liver problems or severe kidney problems
  • have epilepsy or have had seizures
  • have an overactive thyroid that isn't controlled, or phaeochromocytoma, a rare tumour of the adrenal gland
  • are pregnant or breastfeeding

Any risks from NRT are far outweighed by the well-established dangers of carrying on smoking. The risks of carrying on vaping aren't yet known.1

Nicorette QuickMist and other medicines

No interactions between NRT and other medicines have been firmly established.1

But stopping smoking can change how your body handles some medicines. Tell your doctor or pharmacist you're stopping if you take:1

  • clozapine
  • theophylline
  • ropinirole

Nicotine may also increase the effects of adenosine, a medicine sometimes used during heart tests. Tell the team if you're having one.1

Nicorette QuickMist side effects

Side effects are most likely in the first 2 to 3 weeks and usually ease after that. Mouth and throat irritation and hiccups are particularly common in the first few days.1

Very common (1 in 10 people or more):

  • headache
  • hiccups
  • throat irritation
  • feeling sick

Common (up to 1 in 10 people):

  • a burning feeling in the mouth
  • dizziness
  • changes to taste
  • pins and needles
  • cough
  • dry mouth or more saliva than usual
  • tummy pain, indigestion, wind, diarrhoea or being sick
  • a sore mouth or toothache
  • tiredness

Serious allergic reactions are rare. Get emergency help if your face, lips, tongue or throat swell, or you have difficulty breathing.1

Some symptoms, like low mood, poor sleep, irritability, anxiety, restlessness and increased appetite, may be caused by nicotine withdrawal rather than the spray.1

Nicorette QuickMist during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Stopping smoking is the single most effective thing you can do for your health and your baby's. Ideally you'd stop without NRT, but if you can't, NRT carries less risk to your baby than smoking.1

Only start QuickMist in pregnancy after advice from a doctor, pharmacist or midwife. Fast-acting forms like the spray are usually preferred to patches because they allow nicotine-free periods.1

If you're breastfeeding, get advice before using it, and use it as soon as possible after a feed. The small amount of nicotine in breast milk from NRT is less harmful to your baby than second-hand smoke.1

Nicorette QuickMist ingredients

Each spray contains 1mg of nicotine.

The other ingredients are propylene glycol (E1520), anhydrous ethanol, trometamol, poloxamer 407 (containing butylated hydroxytoluene, E321), glycerol (E422), sodium hydrogen carbonate, levomenthol, mint flavour, cooling flavour, sucralose, acesulfame potassium, hydrochloric acid and purified water.1

Each spray contains about 7mg of alcohol, less than in 2ml of beer, which won't have any noticeable effect. Butylated hydroxytoluene may cause local skin reactions, or irritate the eyes and the lining of the mouth.1

How to store Nicorette QuickMist

  • Don't store above 30°C.
  • Close the spray every time you use it, so children can't use it.3
  • Keep it out of the sight and reach of children and pets.
  • Don't use it after the expiry date.

Nicotine doses that adults can tolerate can cause severe poisoning in children, which can be fatal. If a child uses the spray, treat it as an emergency and get medical help straight away.1

Support when stopping smoking

Advice and support usually improve your chances of stopping. Your local NHS stop smoking service, a pharmacist or your GP can help you make a quit plan.1

Always read the label and the leaflet that comes with QuickMist before you start.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can Nicorette QuickMist help me stop vaping?

Yes. It's licensed to relieve cravings and withdrawal symptoms from nicotine dependence, including from vaping. In a study of regular vapers, 82.6% of people using the spray saw their urges to vape fall by at least half during a 2-hour follow-up, compared with 55.1% using a dummy spray.1

  • How long should I use Nicorette QuickMist for?

There's no fixed course. Once you've stopped smoking or vaping, use fewer sprays as soon as you can until you've stopped completely. Speak to a pharmacist or doctor if you're finding it hard to stop using it.1
