What Is Eumovate Cream?
Eumovate Cream is a moderate-potency topical corticosteroid containing clobetasone butyrate. It is commonly used to calm inflammatory skin conditions such as mild to moderate eczema and dermatitis by reducing redness, swelling, and itching.
How Eumovate Cream Works
When the skin is irritated or inflamed, the body produces chemicals that cause redness and swelling. Eumovate Cream helps lower the release of these chemicals, allowing skin inflammation to subside. This action enables damaged skin to recover more effectively, bringing relief from discomfort and helping to restore the skin’s barrier function.
Eumovate Cream Uses
Eumovate Cream is primarily prescribed for relieving the discomfort of mild to moderate inflammatory skin conditions. By addressing redness, swelling, and itching, it can help control flare-ups and restore the skin’s health.
- Managing mild to moderate eczema flare-ups
- Reducing inflammation associated with dermatitis
- Soothing irritated skin patches on the arms, legs, or trunk
- Providing short-term relief for allergic skin reactions
Using Eumovate Cream Effectively
Eumovate Cream is generally used once or twice a day, you can apply the cream less frequently as the skin improves. Before applying it, you should cleanse and dry the affected area. When applying Eumovate Cream, use fingertip united and apply a thin layer and massage it gently into the skin. If you use a moisturiser (emollient), apply that first and wait at least 15-30 minutes so each product has time to be absorbed.
It is important to avoid prolonged treatment, if you find your condition has not improved after 7 days we highly suggest you contact your GP as using Eumovate for more than a few weeks at a time can increase the risk of side effects, including skin thinning or stretch marks.
Do not use Eumovate on broken or infected skin as it can cause these problems to worsen.
For the best results, continue using moisturisers and emollients alongside your steroid treatment, and focus on maintaining a regular skincare routine. If your skin shows no signs of improvement within one to two weeks, or if the condition returns frequently, further medical advice may be needed.
Fingertip units (FTU)
An FTU represents the quantity of topical steroid cream dispensed from a regular tube using a standard 5 mm nozzle onto the fingertip of an adult. The fingertip measurement, measures from the tip of an adult finger to the first crease of the finger. This single FTU is adequate for treating an area of skin equal to twice the size of an adult's flat hand with fingers closely aligned, commonly referred to as a 'handprint.'
General advice for treating skin conditions
To manage skin conditions effectively while using Eumovate cream, follow these tips:
- Avoid triggers such as harsh soaps, allergens, or irritants that may worsen symptoms.
- Keep your skin moisturized with a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to support the skin barrier.
- Wear loose-fitting clothing to reduce irritation caused by friction or sweating.
- Avoid scratching the affected area to prevent further irritation or infection.
- Follow your doctor’s instructions for treatment duration to avoid overuse.
Cautions
Eumovate Cream should not be applied to broken or infected skin, nor used on the face unless directly advised by a doctor.
It also contains paraffin, which can be flammable, so keep treated areas away from open flames and wash any clothing or bedding that comes into contact with the product.
Although rare, certain inactive ingredients may irritate sensitive skin. If your symptoms worsen or if a rash appears, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional.
Side Effects and Overuse
One of the most common side effects is a mild stinging or burning sensation upon application. Overusing a steroid cream like Eumovate can lead to skin thinning and stretch marks, especially if used beyond the recommended timeframe. While rare in topical use, prolonged exposure to strong steroids has been linked to more serious complications. If you notice any unusual symptoms or if the treated area does not improve, seek guidance from a healthcare professional.
