What is EMLA cream?

EMLA cream is a topical anaesthetic. It can be used for a number of reasons such as numbing an area prior to injection and as a treatment for premature ejaculation (PE) in men. It contains the active ingredients Lidocaine and Prilocaine.
This page is for the use of EMLA cream for premature ejaculation. As it is an 'Off-label' use, the directions on the label should be followed and these may differ from those in the patient information leaflet.

Upon completion of your order, our independent prescriber will then review your online assessment. If your assessment is approved, our pharmacy team will then receive a prescription and dispense your order, which will be dispatched the same day using your chosen delivery method.

How it works

EMLA cream is a local anaesthetic and numbs the surface of the skin for a short time, this reduces sensitivity of the penis to help delay the ejaculation response in some men.

How to use EMLA cream for premature ejaculation

Do not follow the instructions in the patient information leaflet instead follow the instructions on the label.
Apply to the underside of the penis 15 - 30 minutes before sex.
Wash off any excess cream as this may transfer to the vagina and cause decreased vaginal sensation, candidiasis and dysuria. It will still have a numbing effect on the penis.
A condom can be worn after applying the cream which will also help, but the chance of the condom splitting is increased.
Do not apply the cream to any broken skin.

Who cannot use EMLA cream

It is generally well tolerated and suitable for most men. However it may not be suitable if you:

  1. Have previously had an allergic reaction to EMLA cream or its ingredients including lidocaine and prilocaine
  2. Have any of the rare inherited conditions porphyria, methaemoglobinaemia or glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency

EMLA Alternatives

There are other methods to try either alongside or instead of EMLA cream:

  1. Priligy tablets
  2. Using a thick condom
  3. Counselling
  4. Behavioural techniques – stop-start" and "squeeze" techniques can help learn how to control ejaculation. These techniques involve learning to recognize the sensations leading up to ejaculation and then stopping sexual activity before ejaculation occurs
  5. Masturbating an hour or two before sex
  6. Lifestyle changes – stopping smoking, diet changes or increasing exercise can help treat premature ejaculation

Treatments do no work the same for everyone and multiple different options may need to be tried before finding an effective treatment. Combining multiple options is usually the best way to treat PE.
