Colgate Duraphat Toothpaste 5000pm
What is Colgate Duraphat?
Colgate Duraphat 5000ppm is a high-strength fluoride toothpaste prescribed for the prevention of dental caries (tooth decay) in adults and adolescents aged 16 years and over who are at increased risk. It contains 5000 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride - over three times more than regular toothpaste - to strengthen enamel, prevent cavities, and stop early decay in its tracks.
How does it work?
Fluoride helps remineralise weakened enamel and makes teeth more resistant to acid attacks from bacteria and sugary foods. Duraphat's high fluoride content is especially effective for people who have a history of dental decay, wear braces or dentures, suffer from dry mouth, or have exposed root surfaces. It helps to reduce bacterial acid production and promotes repair of early tooth damage before cavities form.
How to use Colgate Duraphat
- Brush your teeth three times daily, ideally after meals
- Use a small amount (about 1-2cm strip) on your toothbrush
- Spit out after brushing - do not rinse, so the fluoride stays on your teeth
- Do not swallow the toothpaste
- Not recommended for use in children under 16 years
Who is it for?
Colgate Duraphat is designed for people at high risk of dental decay, including:
- Frequent cavities or history of decay
- Orthodontic appliances (braces, retainers)
- Dry mouth (xerostomia) or reduced saliva flow
- Exposed tooth roots or gum recession
- People with crowns, bridges, or dentures
Side effects
Colgate Duraphat is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects include:
- Mild irritation of the gums or mouth
- Allergic reaction (rare)
- Dental fluorosis (if swallowed regularly over time)
Always follow the directions provided and consult your dentist or pharmacist if unsure.
Warnings and precautions
Colgate Duraphat 5000 is a prescription-only medicine and should be used only under the supervision of a dentist or prescribing pharmacist. Important warnings include:
- Do not use in children or adolescents under 16 years of age
- Do not swallow - the high fluoride content can be harmful if ingested regularly
- Do not use other fluoride products (e.g. mouthwash or supplements)
- Use only the recommended amount - applying too much does not improve effectiveness
- Not suitable for people with fluoride allergy or intolerance
If you experience unusual symptoms, such as stomach upset or white spots on your teeth (dental fluorosis), stop use and seek medical advice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Colgate Duraphat only available on prescription?
Due to its high fluoride content, Duraphat is classed as a prescription-only medicine in the UK.
Can I use Duraphat instead of my normal toothpaste?
Yes, it replaces your standard toothpaste during treatment. Use it exactly as advised and avoid using other fluoride products at the same time unless directed.
Is Duraphat safe for long-term use?
Yes, many patients use Duraphat long term under dental supervision. Regular reviews with your dentist or prescriber help ensure continued safe use.
What if I accidentally swallow some?
Swallowing a small amount by accident is unlikely to cause harm, but frequent swallowing can lead to side effects like fluorosis. Always spit after brushing.
