What Is Betnovate Cream?

Betnovate Cream is a potent topical corticosteroid that contains betamethasone valerate. It is typically prescribed to relieve inflammation, redness, and itching in moderate to moderately severe cases of eczema and dermatitis on the body, arms, and legs. By controlling the body’s inflammatory response, Betnovate Cream helps ease discomfort and enables the skin to begin healing.

How Betnovate Cream Works

When skin becomes irritated or inflamed, the body produces chemicals that widen blood vessels and trigger itching, redness, and swelling. Betamethasone valerate counteracts this inflammatory process by preventing cells from releasing large amounts of these chemicals. This action reduces inflammation, offering a measure of relief from eczema flare-ups. Betnovate is recommended when weaker topical steroids have not effectively managed symptoms.

Using Betnovate Cream Effectively

Betnovate Cream is generally used once or twice a day, you can apply the cream less frequently as the skin improves. Before applying it, you should cleanse and dry the affected area. If you use a moisturiser (emollient), apply that first and wait at least 15-30 minutes so each product has time to be absorbed. When applying Betnovate Cream, use fingertip units and apply a thin layer and massage it gently into the skin.
It is important to avoid prolonged treatment, if you find your condition has not improved after 7 days we highly suggest you contact your GP as using Betnovate for more than a few weeks at a time can increase the risk of side effects, including skin thinning or stretch marks.
Do not use betnovate on broken or infected skin as it can cause these problems to worsen.
For the best results, continue using moisturisers and emollients alongside your steroid treatment, and focus on maintaining a regular skincare routine. If your skin shows no signs of improvement within one to two weeks, or if the condition returns frequently, further medical advice may be needed.

Fingertip units (FTU)

An FTU represents the quantity of topical steroid cream dispensed from a regular tube using a standard 5 mm nozzle onto the fingertip of an adult. The fingertip measurement, measures from the tip of an adult finger to the first crease of the finger. This single FTU is adequate for treating an area of skin equal to twice the size of an adult's flat hand with fingers closely aligned, commonly referred to as a 'handprint.'

General advice for treating skin conditions

To manage skin conditions effectively while using Betnovate cream, follow these tips:

  1. Avoid triggers such as harsh soaps, allergens, or irritants that may worsen symptoms.
  2. Keep your skin moisturized with a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to support the skin barrier.
  3. Wear loose-fitting clothing to reduce irritation caused by friction or sweating.
  4. Avoid scratching the affected area to prevent further irritation or infection.
  5. Follow your doctor’s instructions for treatment duration to avoid overuse.

Key Differences Between Betnovate Cream and Ointment

Both Betnovate Cream and Ointment contain the same active ingredient, but they vary in texture and protective capacity. The cream is lighter, absorbing quickly without leaving a noticeable sheen. The ointment is thicker and retains moisture effectively, forming a stronger barrier over very dry or scaly patches. Despite being greasier, the ointment often proves beneficial when treating severe dryness. Choice of formulation is often based on personal comfort, however if the skin is particularly dry the oitment would likely be a better choice.

Cautions

Betnovate Cream should not be applied to broken or infected skin, nor used on the face unless directly advised by a doctor.
It also contains paraffin, which can be flammable, so keep treated areas away from open flames and wash any clothing or bedding that comes into contact with the product.
Although rare, certain inactive ingredients may irritate sensitive skin. If your symptoms worsen or if a rash appears, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional.

Side Effects and Overuse

One of the most common side effects is a mild stinging or burning sensation upon application. Overusing a potent steroid cream like Betnovate can lead to skin thinning and stretch marks, especially if used beyond the recommended timeframe. While rare in topical use, prolonged exposure to strong steroids has been linked to more serious complications. If you notice any unusual symptoms or if the treated area does not improve, seek guidance from a healthcare professional.

How to store Betnovate Cream

Store Betnovate Cream at room temperature, below 25°C. Keep the tube tightly closed and out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the packaging.
