What is Anbesol Teething Gel?

Anbesol Teething Gel is a specialised gel designed to provide relief from the discomfort and pain associated with teething in infants and young children. It contains a local anaesthetic called lidocaine that helps numb the gums and soothe irritation.

What is Anbesol Teething Gel used for?

Anbesol Teething Gel is used to relieve pain and discomfort caused by teething in babies. It helps numb the gums and reduce the pain associated with the eruption of new teeth. It can also help ease gum inflammation and soreness.

Try gently massaging the gums with a clean finger or a teething ring first. Use teething gel only when these measures have not given enough relief.

How to use Anbesol Teething Gel

For babies and children from five months, gently spread a pea-sized amount on the sore gum with a clean fingertip. Leave at least three hours between doses, with no more than six doses in 24 hours. If the child spits it out, swallows it or vomits, wait three hours before another dose.

Stop when symptoms settle. Do not use for more than seven days for one teething episode. Seek advice sooner if the child seems unwell or symptoms worsen.

Do not combine with another lidocaine-containing product. Excess gel can cause serious effects, including fits. Get urgent medical advice after too much gel or a large accidental swallow, taking the pack with you.

Anbesol Teething Gel ingredients

Active ingredients: lidocaine hydrochloride 1%, chlorocresol 0.1% and cetylpyridinium chloride 0.02%.

Other ingredients: alcohol, clove oil, glycerol, hydroxypropyl cellulose, sodium saccharin and purified water. Chlorocresol can cause allergic reactions.

Anbesol Teething Gel side effects

Side effects are rare but may include mild irritation or a burning sensation in the mouth. In rare cases, allergic reactions such as rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing may occur. If any severe reactions occur, discontinue use and seek medical attention.

How to store Anbesol Teething Gel

Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C. Keep out of reach of children, and ensure the cap is tightly closed after use. Do not use after the expiry date.

Where to buy Anbesol Teething Gel

You can buy Anbesol Teething Gel from almost any pharmacy including online here at Hightown Pharmacy. As it is a pharmacy only medicine a short consultation with the pharmacist is required first to make sure this medication is suitable for you.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Is Anbesol Teething Gel safe for infants?

Yes, Anbesol Teething Gel is specifically formulated for infants aged 5 months and older. However, always follow the dosage instructions and consult a healthcare professional if you have any concerns.

  • How often can I apply Anbesol Teething Gel?

Leave at least three hours between pea-sized doses and use no more than six times in 24 hours. Stop when symptoms settle and limit each teething episode to seven days; seek advice if symptoms persist or worsen.

  • Can Anbesol Teething Gel be used in conjunction with other teething remedies?

You can continue non-medicinal measures such as gum massage or a teething ring. Do not combine it with another product containing lidocaine; ask a pharmacist before adding another teething medicine.
