What is Anusol Suppositories?

Anusol suppositories contain three active ingredients Zinc oxide, Balsam Peru, and Bismuth oxide. These help soothe the itch and shrink the size of piles. Anusol suppositories can only be used for internal, they can be used in combination with Anusol cream.

How it works

Anusol Suppositories contain three active ingredients:
Zinc oxide is an astringent and mild antiseptic.
Balsam Peru has a very mild antiseptic that protects sore areas and may promote healing in the area.
Bismuth oxide is weakly astringent with antiseptic properties.
The combination of these three ingredients preven bacterial growth and shrink and constrict the piles.

Missed dose of Anusol suppositories

They should be used regularly for maximum effectiveness if you miss a dose, do not double dose, simply use a normal dose when you remember and carry on using as normal.

What causes piles?

There are multiple causes of piles including:

  1. Straining while on the toilet
  2. Sitting for longer than needed on the toilet
  3. Obesity
  4. Pregnancy
  5. Low-fiber diets
  6. Regular heavy lifting
  7. Constipation and diarrhoea
  8. Anal intercourse

Other help with piles (haemorrhoids)

Piles are lumps found inside and around the anus. Usuallly they will get better on their own after a few days and will not require treatment. There are ways to help treat and prevent piles, you should:

  1. Make sure you are drinking lots of water
  2. Eat plenty of fibre
  3. Keep your bottom clean and dry
  4. Have a warm bath to ease itching and pain
  5. Wrap an ice pack in a towel and apply to the area do not directly apply an ice pack to the skin as it can cause ice burn
  6. Avoid foods & drinks that can cause constipation such as alcohol and process foods
  7. Gently push the pile back inside
  8. Exercise

You should not

  1. Wipe your bottom rough or too hard, this can break the skin and lead to piles developing
  2. Hold in the urge to poo
  3. Push too hard when pooing
  4. Try to avoid opioids such as codeine as they commonly cause consitpation
  5. If you bleed do not take ibuprofen

How do I know if I have piles

Symptoms of piles include:

  1. Bright red blood in your stools (poo)
  2. Bright red blood or mucus on toilet paper after you wipe
  3. Itchy anus
  4. Feeling like you still need to go after going to the toilet
  5. Feeling like you still need to go after going to the toilet
  6. Lumps and/or pain around your anus

Who cannot use Anusol suppositories

Do not use anusol suppositories if you are allergic to Anusol suppositories or any of the ingredients inside this medicine.

How to use Anusol Suppositories

Anusol Suppositories are inserted directly into the anus, to deliver medication straight to the piles – helping shrink them, soothe itching and relieve pain and discomfort.
They should be used in the morning and after each bowel movement.
To use Anusol suppositories:
Wash the anal area, and gently dry with soft towel before using this medicine.
Remove plastic cover from the suppository before use.
The suppository will melt after insertion.
Use the medication for 7 days, if the piles persist for longer than 7 days contact your doctor.

Anusol suppositories side effects

Side effects are very and are usually mild with Anusol suppositories. If you experience any signs of reaction such as a skin rash stop using Anusol.

  • How do I use Anusol to get the best results?

    You should find the cause of your piles and where possible address them while using the Anusol to help increase the chance of successful treatment and prevent the piles coming back. Common causes of piles include but are not limited to: constipation, low-fiber diet, regular heavy lifting, pregnancy, obesity, anal intercourse, straining, constipation or diarrhoea. Make sure to use the cream for 5-7 days.

  • Can I use Anusol suppositories while pregnant?

    Only use Anusol suppositories under the supervision of a doctor.

  • Can I use Anusol suppositories while breastfeeding?

    Before using any piles treatment be aware that piles after pregnancy tend to go away by themselves. You can use Anusol cream while breastfeeding, only a tiny amount is likely to pass into breast milk. . If you notice your baby is unusually tired, irritable or not feeding well contact your GP, midwife or health visitor.

  • Is it safe to buy Anusol suppositories from your pharmacy?

  • How should I store Anusol suppositories?

    Store this medication in a dry area below 25°C and keep out of direct sunlight. Storing any medicine incorrectly could result in the medicine becoming less effective.

  • What is maximum time I can use Anusol suppositories?

    If your piles have not improved after 7 days of use, stop using the ointment and contact your doctor. If after 7 days they have gone it is safe to continue use for a few days to make sure they are fully gone. Thinning of the skin will only occur if used for a prolonged period of time.

  • What do Anusol suppositories contain?
