What can cause congestion?

Nasal congestion occurs when the blood vessels in the nasal passages become swollen and inflamed. Common causes include:

  • Common Cold: Viral infections often trigger congestion as the body's immune response leads to inflammation.
  • Allergies: Allergic reactions to pollen, dust, pet dander, or certain foods can result in nasal congestion.
  • Sinusitis: Inflammation of the sinus cavities can lead to blockage and congestion.

Other ways to help with congestion

In addition to taking Sudafed you can try a few other methods to help provide relief from congestion:

  • Keep hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids helps thin mucus and ease congestion.
  • Steam Inhalation: Fill a bowl with hot water and hold your head over it, the steam can help moisturise nasal passages and reduce congestion.
  • Nasal sprays: Either nasal sprays can help flush mucus out.
  • Keep your head elevated: This can help reduce congestion during sleep

Sudafed pregnancy

Do not take Sudafed if you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant as it can reduce the blood flow in the placenta and to the baby.

Sudafed breastfeeding

Pseudoephedrine is generally not advised during breastfeeding as it can impact your milk production as well as minimal traces of pseudoephedrine appear to enter breast milk and our understanding of its effects during breastfeeding remains limited.

How pseudoephedrine works

Sudafed's active ingredient, pseudoephedrine, is a decongestant that works by narrowing the blood vessels in the nasal passages. This action reduces blood flow to the swollen tissues, thereby decreasing inflammation and congestion. Sudafed's targeted approach provides fast and effective relief, helping you breathe freely.
