What Are Fluconazole Capsules?
Fluconazole capsules are a treatment for both vaginal thrush (Candidal Vaginitis) and penile thrush (Candidal Balanitis). It is generic version of the more well known Canesten Capsule.
They come in multiple forms and strengths, we currently only stock Fluconazole 150mg capsules.

How to take Fluconazole capsules
Fluconazole is usually taken as a single dose of 150mg.
After treatment with Fluconazole vaginal thrush, penile thrush and oral thrush symptoms should disappear within 7 days. If after 7 days you still experience symptoms of thrush, please contact either a pharmacist or doctor for further advice.
How it works
Fluconazole is a triazole anti-fungal treatment. It works by creating holes in the fungal cells membrane, this causes the cells contents to leak out, killing the fungal cells and clearing the infection. This usually happens very quickly is very effective at clearing fungal infections.
Symptoms of thrush
Thrush symptoms in women
- White vaginal discharge (often like cottage cheese), which does not usually smell
- Itching and irritation around the vagina
- Soreness and stinging during sex or when you pee
Thrush symptoms in men
- Irritation, burning and redness around the head of the penis and under the foreskin
- A white discharge (like cottage cheese)
- An unpleasant smell
- Difficulty pulling back the foreskin
Thrush Prevention
To help prevent thrush from recurring you can:
- Wear breathable underwear, cotton preferably as this will help keep you dry
- For women, douching can actually do more harm than good, disrupting the bacteria and pH in the vagina
- Avoid hot tubs and hot baths
- Change into dry clothes, as soon as possible for example after swimming or going to the gym
- Wipe from front to back
- Change tampons, pads and panty liners often
- If you are diabetic try to keep your blood sugar levels controlled
- Avoid scented sprays and bath products
Fluconazole and pregnancy
Do not take Fluconazole is you are pregnant as it may cause harm to your unborn baby. You may want to consider using an alternative such as clotrimazole cream or pessary.
Fluconazole and breastfeeding
It can be taken while breastfeeding if your doctor or midwife says so. It does pass into breast milk but the amount is unlikely to cause any side effects in your baby. If the baby does not feed as well, seems irritable or unusually sleepy contact your GP, midwife or health visitor.
Fluconazole side effects
Most people are able to take Fluncoazole and not experience any side effects however as with any medication you take, there is a possibility of side effects occurring. The most common side effects include:
- Nausea (feeling sick)
- Vomiting (being sick)
- Stomach pain/ache
- Diarrhoea
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Rash
- Itching
These side effects are likely to be mild and will go away by themsecles. More serious but rare side effects include:
- Fever
- Chest pain
- Trouble breathing
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Severe skin reactions (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis)
- Anemia (low red blood cell count)
- Low white blood cell count
- Signs of jaundice such as signs of yellow skin, the whites of your eyes turn yellow, pale stools, dark urine
- Faster or irregular heartbeat

Who cannot take Fluconazole capsules
They are generally well tolerated and suitable for most adults and children. However they may not be suitable if you:
- Have previously had an allergic reaction to Fluconazole
- Have kidney problems
- Have liver problems
- Have heart disease
- Have abnormal levels of potassium, calcium or magnesium in your blood
Fluconazole interactions
If you take any of the medications Fluconazole may not be suitable for you as the two could interact together:
- Amiodarone
- Amisulpride
- Statins – such as Atorvastatin
- Diuretics – such as Bendroflumethiazide
- Epilepsy medication – such as Carbamazepine
- Macrolide antibiotics – such as Clarithromycin
- Antiplatelets – such as Clopidogrel
- Ergotamine
- Anticoagulants – such as Warfarin
You should also be aware that any herbal or alternative remedies you take may also interact with this medication and cause side effects. If you are taking any herbal or alternative remedies make sure to mention them to your GP, or on the consultation form so we can make sure they are safe to take together.
