Peppermint capsules are a natural supplement that contains peppermint oil, which is extracted from the peppermint plant. They are an anti-spasmodic. Peppermint oil has been used for many years for its digestive and respiratory benefits, and is often used in natural remedies to relieve symptoms of indigestion, nausea, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) such as cramping, bloating and trapped wind.

How Peppermint Oil Capsules work
Peppermint is an antispasmodic. The capsules are specially coated which allowed them to pass through your stomach and into the bowel, where the oil is slowly released. It can then directly act on the bowel causing the muscles to relax and reduce spasms. This helps to relieve the pain of stomach cramps and eases bloating and trapped wind.
How to take Peppermint Oil Capsules tablets
Peppermint Oil Capsules are usually taken ONE capsules three times a day, which can be increased to TWO capsules three times a day.
Swallow the capsules whole, 30 to 60 minutes before food.
Do not take indigestion remedies 2 hours before or after you take this medicine.
Only take peppermint capsules when you are experiencing IBS symptoms.
If you find your symptoms have not improved after 2 weeks, or have gotten worse contact your doctor.
What causes IBS or cramps?
IBS or cramps are usually caused by certain foods. Certain foods are more likely to cause it than other such as fatty, spicy or processed foods. Lifestyle changes to help with IBS
Mild symptoms can usually be controlled by managing stress levels and making changes to your diet and lifestyle. No single diet has been proven to work for all those diagnosed with IBS. To help with IBS symptoms you can:
- Figure out what your trigger food are and avoid them
- Get the right amount of fibre
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Exercise
- Have a good sleep routine
- Avoid processed foods and cook using fresh ingredients where possible
- Try probiotics
Try to avoid:
- Sugary foods including more than 3 portions of fruit
- Eating too quickly
- Skipping meals
- Alcoholic and fizzy drinks
- Too much caffeinated drinks
More severe symptoms may require treatment, however following the above steps can help reduce the serverity of symptoms.
Peppermint Capsules and pregnancy
There is limited data for the use of Peppermint capsules during pregnancy, it is advised to avoid using it while pregnant without first consulting a doctor.
Peppermint Capsules and breastfeeding
It is expected to be OK to take while pregnant. If you notice any change in you babys behaviour such as not feeding as well as usual, is unusually sleepy or you have any concerns contact your doctor or health visitor.
Peppermint Oil Capsules side effects
As with any medication you take, there is a possibility of side effects occurring. The most common side effects of Peppermint capsules are
- Heartburn or indigestion – eat smaller, more frequent meals.
- Itching or irritation around the anus

Peppermint Interactions
If you take any indigestion remedies such as Omeprazole, Lansoprazole or antacids leave at least 2 hours between taking each medication or they may not work correctly.

Can I take Peppermint Capsules while pregnant?
It is not recommended to be taken while pregnant as there are few studies around the effects of Peppermint Capsules during pregnancy. Contact your doctor for more advice.

How should I store Peppermint Capsules?
They should be stored in a dry area below 30°C and kept out of direct sunlight. Storing the capsules incorrectly could result in the capsules becoming less effective.

Can you take peppermint oil capsules with omeprazole?
You should leave at least 2 hours between taking Omeprazole and peppermint capsules. Other than this there is no interactions between the two medications.

When is best to take peppermint oil capsules?
They should be taken around 1 hour before meals and 1 or 2 capsules can be taken up to 3 times a day.
