Mebeverine 200mg MR Capsules contain 200mg of Mebeverine which is a type of medicine known as an antispasmodic. It helps with muscle spasms. It is used to treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other intestinal complaints by relaxing certain muscles in your gut.

How Mebeverine MR Capsules work

Mebeverine MR capsules contain Mebeverine which is a type of medicine called an antispasmodic. When you feel intestinal cramps it is you intestine which has gone into spasm and is squeezing tightly. Mebeverine helps relax the intestine, relieving the cramps and pain caused by IBS or other intestinal conditions.

How to take Mebeverine MR Capsules

Take ONE capsules to be taken TWICE daily, swallowed whole with a glass of water.
Colofac MR Capsules are usually only taken when a flare-up of IBS is occurring. Stop taking them when you feel better, which may take up to 2 weeks.
If you find your symptoms have not improved after 2 weeks, or have gotten worse contact your doctor.

What causes IBS?

IBS is usually caused by certain foods. Certain foods are more likely to cause it than other such as fatty, spicy or processed foods. Keeping a food diary can help track down what your trigger foods are. If you would like more information on IBS you can find some information provided by the NHS here.

Lifestyle changes to help with IBS

Mild symptoms can usually be controlled by managing stress levels and making changes to your diet and lifestyle. No single diet has been proven to work for all those diagnosed with IBS. To help with IBS symptoms you can:

  1. Figure out what your trigger food are and avoid them
  2. Get the right amount of fibre
  3. Drink plenty of fluids
  4. Exercise
  5. Have a good sleep routine
  6. Avoid processed foods and cook using fresh ingredients where possible
  7. Try probiotics

Try to avoid:

  1. Sugary foods including more than 3 portions of fruit
  2. Eating too quickly
  3. Skipping meals
  4. Alcoholic and fizzy drinks
  5. Too much caffeinated drinks

More severe symptoms may require treatment, however following the above steps can help reduce the serverity of symptoms.

Who cannot take Mebeverine MR Capsules

This medication may not be suitable if you:

  1. Have blood present in your stools
  2. Have lost your apetite or lost weight
  3. Have previously had an allergic reacion to Mebeverine
  4. Have paralytic ileus
  5. Have a fever
  6. You have rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, total lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption
  7. Are currently or trying to become pregnant
  8. If you are breastfeeding

Mebeverine MR Capsules and pregnancy

There is limited data for the use of Mebeverine during pregnancy, it is advised to avoid using it while pregnant.

Mebeverine and breastfeeding

A small amount of Mebeverine may pass through the breast milk, it is unlikely to do any harm, but you should still consult with your doctor before taking this medication.

Mebeverine side effects

As with any medication you take, there is a possibility of side effects occurring. The most common side effects of Mebeverine is a mild itchy skin rash. If this happens you can take an antihistamine. Mebeverine interactions

There are no known interactions with any other medication. Do not take two types of IBS treatments together unless you are advised too by a doctor, as they act in the same way and may increase the chance of side effects.

  • How many Mebeverine MR Capsules can I take?

    Only take one capsules twice a day. Do not exceed 1 capsules in a single dose or 2 capsules in a 24 hour period. Take with a glass of water. Always swallow this medication whole do not crush or chew.

  • Is it safe to take Mebeverine MR Capsules long term?

    They can be taken long term but it is recommended to only take Mebeverine when needed, which may take up to 2 weeks. If you find you need to take them longer than 2 weeks contact your doctor for advice.

  • Mebeverine vs Buscopan

    They are very similar in how they work. They are both anti-spasmodics. The choice of treatment tends to depend on the individual, some people will find Buscopan works better and others will prefer Mebeverine. Buscopan works faster kicking in after 15 minutes and will last around 4 - 6 hours, when compared to Mebeverine MR Capsules which takes 1 hour and lasts 12 hours.

  • Is it safe to buy Mebeverine MR Capsules from your pharmacy?
