What it is

O.R.S Oral Hydration Tablets are electrolyte tablets that you dissolve in water. They provide oral rehydration therapy by replacing fluids and essential salts (electrolytes) such as sodium and potassium. They can support hydration when you are mildly dehydrated from diarrhoea, vomiting, hot weather, sport, or travel. Flavours include lemon, blackcurrant and strawberry.

How it works

When you lose fluid, you also lose electrolytes. These salts help your body balance water and keep your muscles and nerves working. O.R.S tablets contain a mix of glucose and electrolytes. Glucose helps the intestine absorb sodium and water more effectively. This may help you rehydrate faster than water alone and can support recovery from mild dehydration.

How to use

Dissolve the directed number of tablets in clean drinking water as stated on the product label (commonly a small glass of around 200ml). Sip the solution slowly and make fresh solution as needed. Always follow the pack instructions for your specific flavour and strength. If you have vomiting, take small, frequent sips and increase as tolerated.

For diarrhoea or vomiting, consider using oral rehydration solutions consistently over 24-48 hours. If symptoms persist beyond 48 hours, or you develop a fever, blood in the stool, or severe tummy pain, seek medical advice.

Who it's for

Suitable for adults and children (age guidance varies by product — follow the label). O.R.S may help when you are mildly dehydrated due to short-term illness, heavy sweating, hot weather or travel. If you are caring for an infant, elderly person, or someone with long-term conditions, seek advice if you are unsure about the right product or if symptoms are severe.

Warnings & precautions

  • Do not use as a sole treatment for severe dehydration, high fever, bloody diarrhoea, persistent vomiting, or signs of shock — seek urgent medical advice.
  • Check with a healthcare professional if you have kidney disease, heart disease, liver disease, are on a fluid or sodium-restricted diet, or have problems with potassium or sodium levels.
  • People with diabetes should be aware that solutions contain glucose; monitor as advised.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to any ingredients. Stop and seek help if you get signs of an allergic reaction (e.g. rash, swelling, breathing difficulty).
  • If symptoms last more than 48 hours, or you cannot keep fluids down, talk to a doctor or pharmacist.

Common interactions

Electrolyte drinks can affect salt and fluid balance. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you take medicines that influence electrolytes or fluids (for example diuretics, some blood pressure tablets, or certain heart medicines). Always follow advice if you have been told to limit fluids or salt.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

Oral rehydration solutions are commonly used in pregnancy and breastfeeding to help manage mild dehydration. If you are unwell, have ongoing vomiting, or you are unsure which product is right for you, talk to your midwife, GP or pharmacist.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • What are O.R.S Oral Hydration Tablets used for?

They are used to help replace fluids and electrolytes lost through diarrhoea, vomiting, sweating, hot weather or exercise. They may help relieve mild dehydration and support recovery alongside rest and light food as tolerated.

  • How do I make up the drink?

Dissolve the directed number of tablets in clean drinking water exactly as stated on your pack (often a small glass of about 200 ml). Stir until fully dissolved and sip slowly. Make fresh solution as needed and discard any unused solution as directed on the label.

  • Can children use O.R.S tablets?

Usage depends on age and the specific product. Check the label for age guidance. For babies and young children, seek advice from a pharmacist or GP. Go to urgent care if a child shows signs of dehydration that do not improve.

  • Do O.R.S tablets contain sugar?

Most oral rehydration products contain glucose to aid fluid and salt absorption. If you have diabetes or follow a low-sugar diet, check the nutrition information on your pack and speak to a pharmacist for personalised advice.

  • When should I seek medical help?

Get medical advice if symptoms last more than 48 hours, you cannot keep fluids down, you have blood in your stools, severe tummy pain, a high fever, signs of severe dehydration (such as confusion, dizziness, very dark urine), or if you are elderly, pregnant or have long-term health conditions.
