What are Dioralyte sachets?
Dioralyte sachets are oral rehydration sachets used to treat dehydration.
They contain a very specific mixture of electrolytes, including sodium, potassium and glucose, when taken properly they help to replenish the body's fluids and electrolytes.
Dioralyte sachets can be used to treat dehydration caused by diarrhoea, vomiting, or excessive sweating. They come as sachets which are dissolved in water and drunk to restore the body's fluids.

How Dioralyte sachets work
Dioralyte sachets contain essential electrolytes, sugars and salts in a specific blend, this blend allows the body to absorb much more vital fluid than normal. They are proven to be more effective at treating dehydration than just water alone.
Symptoms of dehydration
Some signs and symptoms of dehydration include:
- Thirst
- Dry mouth and throat
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Dry skin
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Sunken eyes
- Infrequent urination
- Dark-colored urine
- Constipation
- Dry, sticky mouth or swollen tongue
- Muscle cramps
It is important to note that symptoms can vary from person to person and will also depend on the severity of their dehydration. If you experience any of these symptoms, it's important to drink fluids to stay hydrated and seek medical attention if necessary.
How to use Dioralyte sachets
After each loose motion dissolve the contents of ONE sachet in 200ml of water and drink.
Sachets when made up can be stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
Try to use only 200ml of water when making the sachet up for the best possible effect and do not use anything other than water to make the sachets up.
Who cannot use Dioralyte sachets
Dioralyte sachets are generally well tolerated and safe to take for most people, you may not be able to take this medication if:
- If you or the person they are intended for have ever had an allergic reaction to Dioralyte
- The person they are intended for is under the age of 3 – the dosage is not suitable for their age and weight
- If you or the person they are intended for has kidney problems or are on a low salt diet – the sachets contain a high amount of sodium
Other help with diarrhoea
There are various things you can do to help manage your diarrhoea. The most important thing you to keep in mind is to take plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.
- Take over the counter medication – such as loperamide to reduce the amount of times you need to go to the toilet.
- Avoid fizzy drinks – these can make your diarrhoea worse
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol – these can make your diarrhoea worse.
- Eat small, frequent meals – Large meals put pressure on the intestines, smaller meals will give your intestines a chance to rest and recover.
- Avoid fatty, greasy or spicy food – these can irritate your digestive system and make your diarrhoea worse.
- Get plenty of rest
- Take paracetamol
'Red flag' signs to watch out for
You should keep an eye out for the following symptoms in those with diarrhoea and call 111 if you experience any of the following:
- If you have a baby under 12 months old and are concerned about their health.
- If your child stops breastfeeding or taking a bottle while they are sick.
- If a child under 5 years old shows signs of dehydration, such as reduced wet diapers.
- If you or your child (over 5 years old) continue to show signs of dehydration after using oral rehydration sachets.
- If you or your child have bloody diarrhea or are experiencing bleeding from the bottom.
- If you or your child have been experiencing diarrhea for more than 7 days.
You should call 999 if you experience any of the following symptoms:
- If you are vomiting blood or your vomit looks like ground coffee.
- If you think you may have swallowed something poisonous.
- If you have a stiff neck and experience pain when looking at bright lights.
- If you have a sudden, severe headache or stomach ache, seek medical attention immediately.
Dioralyte sachets and pregnancy or breastfeeding
You can drink Dioralyte sachets while pregnant or breastfeeding but you should still ask your doctor, midwife or health visitor first.

They should be stored in a dry area below 30°C and kept out of direct sunlight. Storing the tablets incorrectly could result in the tablets becoming less effective.
