What are Senna tablets?

Senna tablets are a type of over-the-counter herbal remedy commonly used to relieve occasional constipation. They are derived from the leaves of the Senna plant, scientifically known as Cassia angustifolia or Cassia senna. Senna has been traditionally used for its natural laxative properties, helping to stimulate bowel movements.
The active compounds in Senna, called sennosides, work by irritating the lining of the intestines, promoting contractions within 8 - 12 hours of taking them. This mechanism of action makes Senna an effective and gentle solution for individuals experiencing constipation.

What can cause constipation?

Constipation is a common condition that can affect people of all ages and can be caused by a lifestyle factors such as a lack of fiber in the diet, dehydration, or a sedentary lifestyle. Other causes of constipation include certain medical conditions and medications such as opioids. When left untreated, constipation can lead to discomfort, bloating.

How do Senna tablets work?

Senna is a stimulant laxative, stimulant laxatives work by promoting bowel movements through the stimulation of the intestines. Stimulant laxatives such as senna irritate the intestinal lining, leading to contractions of the muscles in the intestines. The increased muscle activity helps move stool through the digestive tract making it easier for you to have a bowel movement. Senna in particular works by: Irritation of the Intestinal Lining: Sennosides in Senna tablets are broken down by bacteria in the colon into active compounds. These active compounds then irritate the lining of the intestines, specifically the large intestine or colon. Stimulation of Contractions: The irritation caused by Senna triggers contractions in the muscles of the colon. These contractions, also known as peristalsis, help move stool through the intestines. Increase in Water Content: Senna not only promotes muscle contractions but also increases the water content in the intestines. This helps to soften the stool, making it easier to pass. Facilitation of Bowel Movements: The combined effect of muscle contractions and increased water content results in more regular bowel movements, providing relief from constipation.
