What is EarCalm Spray?
EarCalm ear spray is an over-the-counter medication used to treat outer ear infections (otitis externa) and to relieve associated symptoms such as itching and irritation. It contains Acetic Acid (2% w/w), which has antibacterial and antifungal properties, it helps to acidify the ear canal, making it inhospitable for bacteria and fungi that cause infections, helping to clear the infection. It can be used to treat swimmer's ear, which is a common form of outer ear infection caused by water exposure.
How to use EarCalm Spray
Using the spray is simple and straightforward:
- Wash your hands to prevent bacteria getting into your ear.
- Shake the bottle well before use to ensure the medication is properly mixed.
- Before first use, press the pump 6–10 times until a fine spray appears. After more than a week without use, clear the pump with one or two presses.
- Tilt your head to the side that the ear to be treated is facing upwards.
- Gently insert the nozzle into the entrance of the ear canal. Do not insert it too far.
- Press the pump to release one measured dose into the ear.
- Remain in the tilted position for a few minutes to allow the spray to spread inside the ear canal.
- Repeat for your other ear if needed.
- Use at least three times daily, but no more often than every two to three hours.
- Continue two days after symptoms have disappeared, but for no longer than a week. Stop and consult a doctor if symptoms do not improve within 48 hours, worsen, pain occurs or hearing is affected.
Who cannot use EarCalm spray?
EarCalm is for adults and children aged 12 years and over. Do not use it if you are allergic to an ingredient. If you have a perforated eardrum, use it only under medical supervision; seek medical advice for a child under 12.
